the new york times usually sucks pretty bad with their audio slideshow but i think this one is a little diamond in the rough. it's about a pentecostal church in harlem... and it's presented bilingually, and in three chapters. pretty cool.

advanced fall 2008
Outtakes from the semester so far, mostly horrifying.
Jason is going to paint with light with his face.
Anjali wonders what we're doing in the middle of the frozen tundra.
Model model in RJI. Good thing the batteries to my flash died.
I'd like to call this color correcting series something to reflect what a fiasco it was, but I don't think there are words strong enough for that.
Nope.

BADASS!
Phoebe, Anne, Trevor, Luke and I shot our Painting with Light assignment today... it took 8 hours, five strobes, one Abu Ghraib detainee and a lot of patience. I think we worked it out, though, and the result is just badass.
we forced da vinci's vitruvian man to evolve. hottie hot hot.
Here are some (creepy) outtakes from the shoot:
Whoops. f/2.0 instead of f/22.0.
CREEPY CREEPY CREEPY. I'm not even sure how this happened... I might have let go of the shutter right as the lights were coming on. It's really startling, but I think I like it.

who's that lady?
This week we had to shoot a portrait of a classmate in two lighting situations: just one light and maybe a reflector and then in a multiple strobe head fiasco. I shot Chen, who is an exchange student from Beijing studying architecture at Mizzou.
Chen Yang doesn't want to be a photographer, but rather, an architect. "I'm taking [advanced techniques] because there's a connection between all types of art," she said. "Like, when I design a building, maybe a church, I think about light. There's a special kind of beauty in that."
one light source:
In order to study architecture at the University of Missouri, Chen Yang moved away from her family in their native Beijing to a small midwestern college town. Never does this duality in her life represent itself more, Yang says, than in opportunities to shop. "There's only one mall here! At home, we have so many."
What do you think?

studio studio studio
So Stonacek and I spent some time in the studio yesterday so I could practice with the lights before I actually have to do it for class. Yum yum.
I stole these photos from him on facebook, which is hamfisted with its color processing so I promise the colors look better. I'll re-upload when I get copies from him.
